La Ronge RCMP

2014-04-17
3:00 p.m.

On Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 2:30 p.m., Montreal Lake RCMP advised La Ronge RCMP that a vehicle traveling north on Highway #2 at excessive speeds was entering their detachment area and was a concern for public safety. They provided La Ronge RCMP with a description of the vehicle; a grey, four-door car. La Ronge RCMP determined that the vehicle was known to be associated with an aboriginal male on a Canada Wide Warrant from Calgary.

At 3:00 p.m., La Ronge RCMP set up a road block approximately 15 kilometers south of La Ronge on Highway #2. Three marked police vehicles, with emergency lights activated, were involved in the road block. They were unoccupied and officers were positioned outside the vehicles. A spike belt was positioned in the center of Highway #2, beyond the RCMP road block.

Members on scene observed the vehicle and it appeared to accelerate as it approached the barrier. One RCMP member positioned at the barrier discharged an RCMP issued firearm (shotgun) once at the suspect vehicle as it approached. No one was injured as a result of the firearm being discharged.

In an attempt to maneuver through the road block, the suspect car struck a marked RCMP Crown Victoria on the front left corner, causing extensive damage. The other police vehicles sustained no damage. The suspect car then drove over the spike belt, entered the east ditch 300 meters away and stopped.

Two occupants, one male and one female, exited the car and fled on foot, entering the bush line along Highway #2. RCMP secured the scene and awaited Prince Albert RCMP Police Dog Services (PDS). Once they arrived, La Ronge RCMP and Prince Albert PDS began tracking the suspects.

At approximately 7:10 p.m., additional RCMP members, assisted by conservation officers on snowmobiles, located and arrested both suspects on the east side of Potato Lake. The suspects were transported on snowmobile to an RCMP vehicle and, as a precaution, taken to La Ronge Hospital and discharged into RCMP custody.

As a result of the investigation, a 16-year-old female youth faces the following charges:

-          one count of resisting arrest, section 129(a) of the Criminal Code

-          2 counts of breach of an undertaking, section 145(3) of the Criminal Code, for an unrelated matter out of Red Deer, Alberta

Also charged in relation to this incident is 18-year-old Jordan Malcolm Desjarlais, who is on a Canada Wide Warrant deriving from Calgary Police Service. Jordan Malcolm Desjarlais is currently in custody and faces the following charges:

-          one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle, no injury, section 249(1)(a), of the Criminal Code

-          one count of failure to stop a vehicle as soon as is reasonable while being pursued by a peace officer operating a motor vehicle, section 249.1(1), of the Criminal Code

-          one count of failing to stop at the scene of an accident, section 252 of the Criminal Code

-          three counts of assaulting a peace officer with weapon, section 270.01(1) of the Criminal Code

-          one count of theft of a motor vehicle, section 333.1 of the Criminal Code

-          one count of wilful mischief endangering life, section 430(2) of the Criminal Code

-          one count of resisting a peace officer, section 129(a) of the Criminal Code

Jordan Desjarlais and the female youth appeared in La Ronge Provincial Court on Thursday April 17, 2014, at 9:00 a.m. The female youth cannot be named due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Prince Albert RCMP Forensic Identification section will be assisting in the examination of the vehicle. A traffic collision analyst and a traffic collision reconstructionist are assisting and the investigation is ongoing.
