Members of local non-profit Self Help and Recreation Education (SHARE) enjoyed a complimentary Christmas supper on Wednesday night in recognition of their work downtown.

The complimentary turkey dinner was organized in recognition of SHARE’s role in keeping the downtown area clean.

Fresh Air Experience owner Ron Horn organized the dinner at Cindy’s Tasty Morsels to show the community’s gratitude for SHARE’s efforts to keep the downtown area clean.

“As a token of our appreciation, what I decided to do is to sponsor this turkey supper in conjunction with (restaurant owner) Cindy (Gariepy) here just to say thank you, and put a few little candy bags together and serve them a meal and just really let them know how much we appreciate what they do,” Horn said.

SHARE members, who come to the organization through the mental health system, undertake a variety of tasks downtown throughout the year.

Their efforts are primarily focused on the area between First Avenue West and First Avenue East and include shoveling snow, cutting grass and picking up litter, as well as other duties such as bulk mailing.

It shows our guys that they’re important, that they’re valued -- and we’ve never doubted that. Grant Gustafson

SHARE vocational program manager Grant Gustafson noted that the organization requires support from the community in order to function properly.

The complimentary Christmas dinner, he said, was an example of such support.

“We’re doing some stuff in the community, we don’t get paid for it, and then Ron springs something like this on us that normally we would have to pay for,” he said.

“So a little bonus like this kind of offsets some of the times we do the volunteer stuff too.”

Gustafson expressed his thanks on behalf of the organization, pointing to the effects of such community support on the members of SHARE.

“It shows our guys that they’re important, that they’re valued -- and we’ve never doubted that,” he said.
