Two dead in grid-road rollover near Shell Lake Vehicle rollover Survivor escaped upset truck by breaking window JOSHUA PAGÉ The Prince Albert Daily Herald
Shortly after 12 a.m. Thursday, Spiritwood RCMP were called to a single-vehicle rollover north of Shell Lake that killed two people.
The crash happened on Grid #695 about 1 1/2 kilometres north of Shell Lake, killing a 29-year-old Shell Lake man and the vehicle's driver, a 27-year-old woman from Ahtahkakoop First Nation.
Another male passenger managed to escape the 2006 truck by breaking a window.
He was taken to Shellbrook hospital with minor injuries.
The truck was submerged in a slough, according to Spiritwood RCMP.
The deceased woman was found in the driver's seat, while the deceased man was found in the water after either being ejected or escaping through the truck's back window.
Both were declared dead on the scene, according to RCMP.
Spiritwood EMS paramedic supervisor Kyle Fereda said three paramedics went to the scene.
Fereda added the survivor told authorities he managed to escape from the vehicle and run to the nearest house to call for help.
Fereda noted the vehicle was on its roof and submerged in the slough and that a farmer's tractor aided in pulling the truck out.
The Shell Lake fire department, Big River RCMP and Spiritwood fire department also attended the scene. Spiritwood Fire Chief Jeff Hujber said all units worked cohesively to remove the vehicle from the slough and address the scene.
"It's very difficult, but we got a job to do, so you get out there and do it. That's about it," he said.
The six volunteer firefighters who attended the crash met Thursday afternoon to make sure they were all dealing with the crash scene OK.
"I think anybody who is involved in this type of job is a special person," Hujber said.
Spiritwood RCMP were withholding the names of both the deceased, pending notification of next of kin.
They also didn't release the name or age of the survivor.
Speed and extremely icy roads were likely factors in the crash, according to RCMP.
Shell Lake is about 100 kilometres west of Prince Albert.
