Two dead in rollover near Shell Lake
The Prince Albert Daily Herald
Shortly after 12 a.m. Thursday, Spiritwood RCMP were called to a single-vehicle rollover north of Shell Lake on Grid No. 695. Big River RCMP detachment members also assisted. A 2006 truck was found in the east ditch about 1 1/2 kilometres north of Shell Lake submerged in a slough.
One man was able to exit the vehicle by breaking a window. He only sustained minor injuries and was transported to Shellbrook Hospital by EMS, said RCMP.
Spiritwood EMS, Spiritwood fire deptartment, and Shell Lake fire deptartment were able to extricate the truck from the slough with assistance from local farmers using heavy equipment. The woman who was the driver of the truck was found in the driver's seat and pronounced dead on scene, said RCMP.
A second man, who was a passenger, was either ejected or exited through the back window of the truck and was found in the water by RCMP and removed by the fire department. He was also pronounced dead by paramedics on scene.
The bodies were released by the coroner and transported to Prince Albert where autopsies were ordered on both. The names of the deceased are not being released pending next of kin notification.
The deceased man was 29 years old and from Shell Lake, the deceased woman was 27 from the Ahtahkakoop First Nation. The lone survivor is from Prince Albert.
Some additional factors as to the cause of the accident are believed to be extremely icy road conditions and excessive speed, said police. The investigation is ongoing.
Shell Lake is about 100 kilometres west of Prince Albert.
