Friends and family of a man fatally shot by Mounties on a
Sask
atchewan reserve hope an inquest will shed some light on why their loved one died.
The five-day inquest into the death of 21-year-old Kenneth Chase Wilfred Standingready-McKay began Monday.
Sonya Shinta, a friend of Standingready-McKay, says she hopes she will finally find out why police resorted to shooting him rather than talk to him.
On June 14, 2008, police responded to a domestic dispute at Standingready-McKay's home on the White Bear First Nation.
Few details about the fatal shooting that night are known.
Coroner Keith Kilback of Regina will preside at the inquest, which will examine in detail the events surrounding the death and come up with recommendations to prevent a similar occurrence.
