Vaccine order designed to protect most vulnerable print this article
Health region asks that no one try to jump the queue, as some boast of lying to get vaccine early
ANGELA HILL
The Prince Albert Daily Herald

With the changing information on the H1N1 vaccine, people are getting prepared to take matters into their own hands.

Some people have posted comments on the Daily Herald website saying they have lied, or plan to lie, in order to get their vaccinations early.

The Prince Albert Parkland Health Region is asking people not to try to jump the queue.

"That is a challenge. The only thing we can do is ask that people think about that person, who is of that particular high-risk group, who will not be able to get (the vaccine) and will probably be the one that winds up on a ventilator," said Dr. Khami Chokani, medical health officer for the region.

"We are hoping that people come honestly and maintain their integrity."

Chokani said they'll take people at face value, but they are expecting people to bring identification.

Currently, the only groups eligible for immunization in Saskatchewan are pregnant women, those who have recently given birth and children between six months and five years old.

The order of vaccination is based on who will be the most ill if they get the flu.

This is different to the rollout of the vaccination in other provinces, where it's first come, first served in the high-risk categories.

Chokani said the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health decided against this process to avoid people lining up for hours, as is being seen in some places in Canada.

"We are trying to avoid a situation where we run out," he said.

The health region does not have much planning time left to decide on how to continue rolling out their immunization schedules.

"We are only (now) getting to know about the amount of vaccine we are going to get in two weeks," Chokani said.

They are hoping to increase the age range of kids to include up to 13-year-olds in the near future. The best way to keep on top of changing data is by checking the health region's website at paphr.sk.ca, said Chokani.

"We will only be able to let people know what's going on the next week on the Thursday or Friday before."

Once a group is eligible for the vaccination, they will always be eligible.

There are no private clinics in Saskatchewan that have received the vaccine.

j day from sask writes: With evcrything going on with the H1N1 why do doctors, nurses and all their families get the needle first? I would like to know why Teachers can not get the needle when they are dealing with all these sick kids from day to day. Doesnt make any sense. What about the day care workers too. These people are in the midst of all the sickness but yet are not allowed to get the needle yet.

Hmmm from Saskatchewan writes: My wife is a healthcare worker who has been vaccinated, I have to wait just like everyone else, so does our young daughter...the doctors, nurses, and other disciplines are directly dealing with this illness everyday, don't you think its only fair to protect the people who take care of sick patients all the time, if they get sick who will do their job?? They are our frontline support system against this flu & every other illness encountered! Give them some thanks!

I.P. Freely from Out There somewhere, SK writes: How about all these families on reserves up north raising their 17 children on welfare? why should they get it first and not the people who pay into the welfare system to support them?

K from Prince Albert, Sask writes: I agree that the front line workers and anyone who works in the hospital have a chance to get the vaccine first and foremost before anyone else. They deal directly with the illness and if they are sick then there will be bigger issues at hand...

As for the teachers... I agree there too.. they will be dealing with sick kids and not know whether or not they have the illness until it is almost too late. So they should be up there with the ones who get theirs first.

As for the jails.. that's only common sense... the inmates wouldn't need to get the vaccine because they are incarcerated. It would be the workers that would most likely bring the illness to work with them. Vaccinate the workers and hopefully that will help out with the inmates. As for visitors, it should be only those who have been vaccinated that visit and can verify that they have done so... From what one keeps hearing that those that are vaccinated help in protecting those that aren't. If this is the case, then doing it that way will help out tremendously and cut down on the number of vaccines going to the jails at this point.

I also think that all stores should be required to have something available to clean the carts and those that have doors that a person has to open, some type of hand sanitizer should be there right as you walk in. That is a big part in the spread of any type of illness. If they want people shopping in the store, then have the decency to promote these things....

Prevention is the key.. a person can sanitize there hands then walk into a store and touch a cart where someone else has used and has an illness.. you touch your face and then guess what..... you got it...
Only common sense...
