The Prince Albert Fury didn't win the provincial midget lacrosse title on the weekend, but they still accomplished quite a feat.

For the first time in coach Dave Werrett's 10-year tenure with the Prince Albert Box Lacrosse Association, he led his group to victory over a Saskatoon team in a playoff game.

The Fury beat the Saskatoon Go With the Flow 7-5 to take home the bronze medal Sunday at Kinsmen Arena in Prince Albert.

Matt Anholt and Luc Lemire led the Prince Albert offence, with two goals each.

"It was a good game," Werrett said. "The boys played very well. We were short. We lost a couple players due to injuries and suspensions. They persevered and came through. They played well."

The Fury were without Sawyer Lange, who had recently recovered from a couple of broken ribs. In Prince Albert's second game, a 9-8 loss to the Regina Mammoth, Lange sprained his ankle.

"That was a big loss, but the kids fought through," Werrett said.

Lange, one of the team's leaders, spent most of this season with the midget Prince Albert Stealth and junior Prince Albert Predators.

Brennan Boruch was out of the lineup after receiving a three-game suspension for a hit in the Fury's 7-4 semifinal loss to Regina Fish.

Besides Anholt and Taylor Wilcox, both of whom made the tournament all-star team, Werrett said Brady Leachman had a strong tournament individually.

"He's a pretty good team leader," Werrett said of Leachman.

After opening the tournament with a 9-4 win over the Saskatoon Darcie's, the Fury needed to beat the Regina Mammoth to finish first in their group, because if the teams tied, Regina would've come out on top thanks to goal differential.

Against the Mammoth, with the score tied 8-8, Werrett pulled his goalie, Lucas Wells, for the extra attacker and gave up a ninth goal.

In the gold-medal game, it was an all-Regina affair, with the Fish beating the Mammoth 11-2.
