The Minto Rec Centre is all set to host the eighth annual Saskatchewan Seniors Association Incorporated provincial bowling finals March 9-10.

The two-day, winner-take-all tournament will yet again be hosted at the Rec Centre after successfully hosting the event in the past.

Rec Centre senior facilitator Don Hlewka Jr. said that after hosting the bowling event at the 2014 Saskatchewan Winter Games, the venue is prepped to host yet another large-scale tournament of at least 185 bowlers.

“There is a lot to do behind the scenes to make sure everything’s in the computer, there’s changes right up to the first ball being thrown lots of times,” Hlewka explained of preparations. “It’s a provincial event so we want to make sure everything is in good standing.”

While hoping to fill three more slots, the tournament is set to go with 35 teams of five bowlers, each playing six games.

“It’s just straight up total pin fall over six games with handicap,” Hlewka explained of the tournament format. “At the end, the team with handicap that receives the most points will receive the gold medal.”

With bowlers 50 years old and up from across the province, including Kelvington, Melfort, Saskatoon, Rosetown and the Battlefords converging on P.A. for the event, it’s a great benefit to both the city and the sport.

“It’s huge financially for the city in regards to people coming in,” Hlewka said. “Not only that, the seniors get an opportunity to gather together and build new friendships.”

Registration for the tournament is still open with an entry cost of $150 that includes six games, supper, a banquet and a chance to win door prizes including a set of bowling balls.

Hlewka hopes the event will promote the sport to more seniors looking for activity options as the event is open to all senior bowlers of any skill level.

“It’s all about active living,” he said. “If you are on the fence about becoming involved in bowling as a senior, come on down.”

Those interested in participating are encouraged to contact SSAI president and event chair Sheila Righi at 306-922-8238.
