The Prince Albert Raiders opened up their WHL pre-season with a 2-1-shootout defeat at the hands of the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday at the Co-Operators Centre in Regina.
Raiders forward Matteo Gennaro netted the first goal of his team’s pre-season, beating Hurricanes backstop Stuart Skinner with a shorthanded marker 11 minutes into the second frame.
Gennaro’s mid-period goal was shaping up to be a game winner until late in the third period, Raiders forward Tim Vanstone took a roughing penalty. With three seconds remaining in the ensuing power play, Hurricanes left wing Carter Amson tied things up with just under five minutes remaining in the period, sending the game to overtime.
As a five-minute period of four-on-four hockey solved nothing, the game headed to a shootout.
In the shootout, Raiders sophomore goaltender Nick McBride, who made 36 saves on Friday, blanked Hurricanes shooters Jaeger White and Nikita Milekhin on their attempts before Jamal Watson snuck one by him to clinch victory.
At the other end of the ice, Skinner stopped Raiders shooters Reid Gardiner, Simon Stansky and Gage Quinney to lift the Hurricanes to their first pre-season triumph.
While the Raiders trimmed their roster down to 32 players following their annual intra squad game on Tuesday, the typical 18 skaters took to the ice on Friday.
Dressed for the Raiders for their opening pre-season contest were forwards Tim Vanstone, Dylan Williamson, Reid Gardiner, Luke Coleman, Matteo Gennaro, Simon Stansky, Sean Montgomery, Ryan Pruden, Dylan Stewart, Darcy Zaharichuk, Gage Quinney and Parker Kelly.
In the backend, defencemen Ryan Coghlan, Brendan Guhle, Curtis Roach, Ben Verrall, Brennan Riddle and Cody Paivarinta dressed for the Raiders.
The Raiders continue on with pre-season action in Regina as they take on the Calgary Hitmen at the Co-Operators Centre.
The puck drops at 3 p.m.
