Following their annual intra squad game on Tuesday, the Prince Albert Raiders trimmed their roster down to 32 players, signing three to WHL standard deals on Wednesday.
The Raiders announced that they signed forwards Parker Kelly, Sean Montgomery and defenceman Curtis Roach to WHL contracts as the team trimmed their roster down to two goalies, 12 defencemen and 17 forwards.
Both coming from the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League, 15-year-old Kelly was a seventh round pick in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft while 1998-born Montgomery was selected in the sixth round of the 2014 draft.
Kelly tallied 35 goals and 25 assists in 31 games last season, while Montgomery posted 19 goals and 18 assists in 35 games for his hometown Calgary Royals.
A Saskatoon product, Roach hails from the Saskatchewan Midget-AAA Hockey League where he tallied two goals, 26 assists and 44 penalty minutes in 44 games with the Saskatoon Contacts last season.
A total of four defencemen were cut from the Raiders’ roster following Tuesday evening’s intra squad tilt between Team Green and Team White; Cole De Jonge, Austin Crossley, Zachary Hayes and Ashton Heidt.
Up front, 10 forwards were cut from the roster as Raiders training camp drew to a close; Tyler Maser, Tyler Heidt, Michael Clarke, Reed Gunville, Caleb Seaman, Josh Maser, Cole Booth, Gavin Payne, Rylan Freed and Aaron Ryback.
Between the pipes, goalies Rylan Parenteau, Nick McBride and Ian Scott remain in the Raiders lineup.
While the Raiders final roster begins to take shape, so does the team’s overage player situation for the upcoming season.
Starting the off-season with seven 1994-born players on the roster, the Raiders have narrowed things down to defenceman Sawyer Lange, two-way forward Calder Brooks and centres Dakota Conroy and Jayden Hart.
Each team in the WHL is permitted a total of three 20-year-old players on their roster.
The Raiders will now hit the road for a pre-season tournament in Regina this weekend before playing a home-and-home exhibition series with the Saskatoon Blades on Sept. 5-6.
