The sixth annual Raiders Day kicked off the unofficial start of the 2014-15 season.

Starting at 9 a.m. season ticket holders were invited to pick up their booklets at the Art Hauser Centre and browse Raider merchandise at the store.

“The day’s going real (well),” Raiders marketing director Bruce Vance said. “It’s nice to get fans excited about the upcoming season.”

The Prince Albert Co-op hosted a barbecue from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with all proceeds going toward the WHL Education Fund.

The day also finished off with the annual Raiders Intra Squad game at 7 p.m. Proceeds from admission to the game also went toward the education fund.

“Certainly one of the big things that we provide is an education for our players and the scholarship fund is the basis of that and for every year they play in the WHL,” Vance said.

The Raiders guarantee to pay for a year of tuition and books at the post-secondary school of their choice.

Vance added that it’s a big responsibility for the community and the Raiders look for every opportunity to fundraise.

The Raiders first exhibition game is on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. versus the Saskatoon Blades. Another exhibition game lands on the following Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. versus the Regina Pats.

The 900 CKBI home opener is on Friday, Sept. 19 against the Saskatoon Blades at 7 p.m.

Raiders main training camp ends

The Prince Albert Raiders main training camp ended on Tuesday evening with the annual intra squad game between the Green team and White team.

Raiders director of player personnel Dale Derkatch said all players who showcased this weekend were competitive -- from rookie camp to main camp.

“I think the players came in relatively good condition,” Derkatch said. “I think they worked relatively hard over the summer.”

A few rookies stood out during the rookie and main camps, including Dylan Williamson and Sean Montgomery. Williamson was selected during the fourth round, 88th overall, in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. Williamson was a left-winger with the Calgary Bisons.

Montgomery was selected in the sixth round, 114th, overall, in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. Montgomery is a forward who played with the Calgary Royals.

“There were guys that came in we were surely waiting to see what they would do,” Derkatch said. “I thought our ’99 class players we just drafted came in and did themselves proud.”

“I think it was a first experience for all of them and it was just, get your feet wet, and I thought they all did really well,” he added.

The Raiders also signed 2014 CHL Import Pick, Simon Stransky to a WHL standard contract on Monday during the main training camp.

“We knew coming in, we had a scouting report about him earlier, and he confirmed (the report) when he went out on the ice,” Derkatch said.

“He’s a good skater with good hands and seems to really understand the game and he competed as well quite hard … he deserves to be with us,” he added.
