Forty-three rookie athletes are hitting the ice to compete for limited spots on the Prince Albert Raiders roster this weekend.

The Prince Albert Raiders rookie camp started with a fitness testing on Friday afternoon at Carlton Comprehensive High School and continued with practice sessions at the Art Hauser Centre in the evening.

Among the prospects are Prince Albert Mintos defenseman Brody Reimer and Beardy’s Blackhawks centre Reed Gunville.

“I was pretty excited I got into the camp,” Brody Reimer said. “I was pumped to work my best against the other top prospects in the Western Hockey League.”

Reimer, 16, received a call in June inviting him to the rookie camp.

“I thought it would be a good experience and to just come out here and do my best,” Reimer said.

Originally from Prince Albert, Reed Gunville, 16, made the 40-minute trip to play with the Beardy’s Blackhawks during the 2013-14 season. In 2010, he played with the bantam AA Prince Albert Venice House Pirates and the Junior Raiders.

After receiving an email inviting Gunville to the camp, trying out was the next step.

“I thought it would be a good experience, a good chance to try out,” Gunville said.

According to Raiders general manager Bruno Campese, all the players that were invited have shown up for the weekend.

“Everyone’s here and everyone’s excited to get started,” Campese said.

While it’s too early to say what the upcoming 2014-15 season will be like, Campese has some expectations.

“Obviously, you start the year with great anticipation and we like our returning players coming back and we like the new guys joining our club,” he said.

Campese expects the new roster will be set in about a month though it’s hard to say how many changes there will be.

“It’s hard to say, obviously we lose some 20 year olds,” Campese said. “We’ve lost probably four to seven guys. There might be someone at training camp who surprises us, all of a sudden a veteran might lose his job but it’s all up in the air right now.”

The rookie camp will continue on Saturday, Aug. 23 and Sunday, Aug. 24. A limited number of players will be carried over to the Raiders Main Camp, which begins Sunday afternoon.
