With the goalie pulled, the Prince Albert Raiders scored two unanswered goals in the last three minutes of the third period losing to the Red Deer Rebels 4-3 in overtime at the Enmax Centrium on Friday.
Raiders goalie Cole Cheveldave dueled Rebels backstop Patrik Bartosak until the dying seconds of the first period. Cheveldave and Bartosak stopped 10 shots apiece before Rebels defenceman Brady Gaudet scored a power play goal with two seconds left on the clock to put the Rebels up 1-0.
Both Cheveldave and Bartosak have started every game this season for their respective teams. Friday's game was Cheveldave's ninth straight start, Bartosak's eighth.
The Rebels struck again on the man advantage within five minutes of the second period to make it 2-0 with a point shot from defenceman Hayden Fleury that deflected off the stick of Rebels scoring leader center Connor Bleakley.
Shortly after Rebels right wing Rhyse Dieno added a unassisted goal in the third, 6-foot-5, 237-pound Raiders defenceman Mackenze Stewart dropped the gloves with 6-foot-3, 190-pound Rebels defenceman Kayle Doetzl.
The tilt appeared to ignite the Raiders who a few minutes later began their dramatic comeback, scoring their first marker, unassisted, from defenceman Sawyer Lange.
Raiders coach Cory Clouston pulled Cheveldave with over two minutes remaining in the third for the extra attacker, allowing defenceman Josh Morrissey to put the Raiders within one.
Again with Cheveldave on the bench, center Leon Draisaitl scored to tie the game with less than 30 seconds remaining, extending his scoring streak to four games. Reid Gardiner notched an assist on both Draisaitl and Morrissey's extra-man goals.
Prior to the dramatic comeback the Raiders were 0-for-4 on the power play and outshot the Rebels 44-36 in regulation.
Rebels right wing Matt Bellerive spoiled the Raiders comeback scoring less than 30 seconds into the Raiders second overtime period of the season.
Bellerive’s overtime goal was his third point of the night and his first game-winning goal of the season.
The Raiders four-game road trip continues over the weekend, facing the Calgary Hitmen on Saturday and the Kootenay Ice on Sunday.
