Raiders fire 41 shots, but lose key home game in playoff chase

Chilliwack coach and GM Marc Habscheid gambled Wednesday night, and it paid off with a playoff berth for his Bruins.

Habscheid opted to rest Lucas Gore, the Canadian Hockey League goaltender of the week, and start backup Braden Gamble, a relative unknown in WHL circles.

Gamble responded with a solid 39-save effort that clinched a Western Conference playoff position for the Bruins and dealt a crushing blow to the Raiders in their quest for post-season action in the much-less-forgiving Eastern Conference.

"I got into (form) early, because Prince Albert came out firing, so that was good," said Gamble, sporting a playoff-drive T-shirt. "I felt pretty good in the morning skate, and that's usually a good indication."

Most of the 1,889 fans were still at home watching Olympic hockey when Bruins sniper Ryan Howse capitalized on a Raider turnover and out-waited goaltender Jamie Tucker to score his 41st goal of the season.

Raiders centre Justin Maylan, seconds earlier robbed by Gamble, scored on a redirection to make it 1-1 late in the first period, but Roman Horak responded 22 seconds later with the first of his two goals.

The Bruins went up 3-1 when Horak slipped a backhander past Tucker early in the second period. That ended a forgettable night for Tucker, who gave up three goals on 11 shots before giving way to Garrett Zemlak.

But it was "a team loss" for the Raiders, said captain Dustin Cameron.

"Yeah, we outshot them (41-18) tonight, but there definitely could have been better play by everybody else," Cameron said. "It wasn't really a group effort. We were lacking some guys going tonight, including myself. I don't think I was there. I've got to make a bigger difference than I did tonight.

"In saying that, we've got to put this behind us and get back to work tomorrow."

The Raiders, sitting on the outside of the playoff picture, play six of their final nine regular-season games on the road. They begin a five-game road trip Friday in Saskatoon against the Blades.

One of the Raiders with jump in his step Wednesday was Maylan, whose two-point night included an assist on Jonathan Parker's first goal as a Raider. That cut the Chilliwack lead to 3-2 midway through the game, but the Raiders couldn't take advantage of a 13-3 shot differential in the final period.

Gamble, who began this season with the Alberta junior A Drumheller Dragons, made save No. 40 when he thwarted a hard-charging Maylan with 2:25 left.

"Their goalie got lucky and played really well," Maylan said. "If it wasn't for their goalie, I think we could have came away with two points.

"Even if a goalie is standing on his head, we've got to find a way to get the two points. I think we all know what we have to do. It's Game 63 and we've just to bring it every night and pay the price. If everybody does that, we'll definitely be successful."

Raiders defenceman Nathan Deck came close to tying the score late in the third period, but a review of the play showed the puck didn't cross the goal-line.

Prince Albert coach-GM Bruno Campese called a timeout with 45 seconds left and pulled Zemlak in favour of an extra skater. Ryan Harrison won the ensuing draw in the Chilliwack zone, but the Raiders couldn't finish the job.

The latest loss left the Raiders in ninth place, a point behind the eighth-place Swift Current Broncos and two back of the Moose Jaw Warriors, who lost 4-3 in overtime Wednesday in Saskatoon.
