Prince Albert golfers Brooke Hobson and Kayla Sawchuk are in good shape following round one of the 2014 Saskatchewan Junior Championship on Monday at the Evergreen Golf and Country Club in Nipawin.
Shooting a two-above-par 75 in her opening round, Sawchuk finished the day atop the leaderboard with Regina’s Brooke Hill trailing by 10 strokes.
Behind Hill in third is defending-champion Hobson, who shot 87 on the 3,232-yard (from the tips) course, which features four par-fives, 10 par-fours and four par-threes.
Sawchuk’s strong round one performance was punctuated by a quartet of birdies on the fourth, fifth, 15th and 18th holes.
On the boy’s side, Shaunavon’s Corey Bailey finished round one ahead of the 52-golfer pack with a blistering 70-stroke round followed by Roman Timmerman in second.
Tied with Bengough’s Tyrin Foley in third is boy’s defending-champion and Prince Albert product Cory Selander, who shot an even 72 on Monday.
Selander dropped birdies on the third, fourth, 17th and 18th holes while bogeying four.
Joining Selander on the links in Nipawin are five other golfers representing Prince Albert; Cole Hobson (44th), Zach Hurd (11th), Cory Sawchuk (16th), Kyle Schneider (11th) and Chase Lato (52nd).
Round two of the tournament kicks off on Tuesday as the event wraps up with round three on Wednesday.
