Ring, Hobson take City Open crowns

Martin Ring was joking on the Cooke Municipal Golf Course about having a chance to hang around with the young bucks.

A couple of holes later he learned that experience pays.

Ring shot 71-73-70 for a 54-hole total of 214, two strokes better than Brett Henry.

“I joked about being able to play with the young guys but it’s fun,” he said in the pro shop a few minutes after learning he had won. “It’s fun to be able to compete with them. Sometimes the shorter hitter can prevail if you keep your wits about you.”

Ring had never won the tournament before, guessing he had been the runner-up 15 or more times. He didn’t play in the tournament in 2012 and last missed it before then when he got married 28 years ago.

“It really does just come down to eliminating some mistakes and just not making that big number,” Ring said. “And today I didn’t make that big number. I made some really good birdies coming down the stretch. I made a birdie on 16 that kind of set the table for me for 17 and 18.”

Fourteen-year-old Brooke Hobson won the women’s championship, overcoming a two-stroke deficit to begin the final round. She shot 79-86-82 for a 54-hole total of 247, six strokes better than Pauline McDougall.

“I hit the ball pretty solid,” she said. “I had a few high numbers but I was able to come back from those so that helped a lot.”

She said she struggled a bit on Sunday but rebounded for a better round on Monday with some good putting.

“I usually just go shot by shot and play my game and see how it works out in the end,” she says. “As long as I play good, I’ll be happy.”

Ring chuckled about the age of the women’s champ and the guys he was playing against.

“My putter is 32,” he said with a laugh.
