--PRINCE ALBERT--  Coming off an excruciating semifinals loss in Waskesiu, Prince Albert’s Preston Rindal can now put those memories to bed, as victor of last weekend’s junior golf tournament at Elk Ridge Resort.

“It’s nice to finally win one this year,” said Rindal, whose 2-under on the final round was enough to obtain his first victory of the season.

Rindal opened his title performance on Saturday with a 75, which kept the 18-year-old within two strokes of the leader for the start of Sunday’s final round. Rindal had a sensational Sunday on the links, shooting a 2-under 70 for the comeback win.

“It was pretty exciting to come from behind yesterday and finally win one against some pretty good players,” said Rindal, who didn’t lose a single ball over the course of the weekend.

Aaron Vogel of Regina entered Sunday with a two-stroke lead, which quickly evaporated. Rindal ended up winning his grouping – ages 17-19 – comfortably, by five strokes.

“It was my best showing for the year, for sure,” said Rindal, whose season has been chock full of runner-up performances.

And with only one remaining tournament, the Men’s City Open at Cooke Municipal Golf Course, the Prince Albertan is ecstatic to have broken the duck.

“It was really nice. I’m happy with what I’m doing right now,” said Rindal, who plies his trade without direction and guidance from a coach. “When things are going weird I just take time to work on it and figure out what I was doing wrong.”

The tournament was played on Saturday and Sunday, and consisted of three different age groupings for boys, in addition to the lone girls draw.

Dhrake Berezowski finished fourth in the boys 13 and under with Connor Phaneuf trailing him in fifth, both of whom hail from Prince Albert and are 12 years old.

Cory Selander of Prince Albert finished fifth in the boys aged 14 to 16 grouping.

Kayla Sawchuk, also of Prince Albert, finished as the runner-up in the girls grouping.

Rindal competes as part of the Men’s City Open, which tees off at Cooke Municipal Golf Course at 6 a.m. on Saturday morning.
