The Saskatchewan Green lost 27-19 to Ontario in the gold-medal game at the 2014 Football Canada Cup at the University of Saskatchewan Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon.
The Saskatchewan Green roster included offensive linesman Luke Tkatchuk from Prince Albert.
Saturday’s game started with Saskatchewan-Green getting the ball at Ontario’s 28-yard line after a fumble. Saskatchewan took an early lead of 3-0 with a field goal.
Saskatchewan’s punt kept Ontario at their own three-yard line, but Ontario responded with a 59-yard touchdown run. With the field goal, the score was 10-3 for Ontario.
With a more than a minute left in the first half, Saskatchewan ran 18-yards to tie the score 10-10. Just before halftime, Ontario kicked a field goal making the score 13-10.
In the third quarter, Saskatchewan fumbled the ball, resulting in an Ontario touchdown, making the score 20-10. On their next possession, the green team completed a 4-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sawyer Buettner to receiver Kade Balyk, bringing the score to 20-17 for Ontario.
At the end of the third quarter, Ontario gave up a safety touch to Saskatchewan making the score 20-19.
In the final quarter, Ontario widened the score by scoring another touchdown with four minutes left in the game, resulting in the final score of 27-19. With three minutes to go, Saskatchewan was at the Ontario 51-yard line, facing third down and two, when they fumbled the ball. Ontario recovered and finished the game.
The players of the game for the Saskatchewan-Green were receiver Kade Belyk from Regina and defensive back Benjamin Whiting from Saskatoon.
Saskatchewan-Green’s quarterback Sawyer Buettner won the Canada Cup’s offensive MVP.
