The NorSask Diefen-Break-Hers lost a roller derby heartbreaker in the final seconds to the Black And Blue Crew on Saturday evening at the Dave G. Steuart Arena.

The Black And Blue Crew was a team cobbled together especially for the bout after the Gapland Rollers from Rocanville couldn’t field a squad after agreeing to the game.

The visitors won the roller derby bout 197-195 on the final jam.

Each team has five players skating on the oval, with four of them called blockers and one wearing a star on their helmet called a jammer. To score points, the jammer must skate by the other team’s blockers.

Each time they start again, it’s called a jam and that lasts either two minutes or until the lead jammer calls it off early.

After leading by 30 at the half, which isn’t considered a large margin, the Diefen-Break-Hers saw the Black And Blue Crew tie it with just over two minutes left at 181. The two teams then went into the final jam with 36 seconds left tied at 185.

Anastastia, who won’t use her last name but goes by the roller derby name “Commie,” is a veteran roller derby athlete who scored the final points for her team’s win. She was happy with the way the team came together.

“Some of us didn’t even know each other until we got here today,” Commie said. “It took us most of the first half to gel and figure out how each other plays and what each other can do. After that, in the second half, we won the game so I guess it went well.”

The visitors had some players from their original opponent with other players picked up from Regina, Saskatoon, Lakeland, Rocanville and Moose Jaw.

The loss left the NorSask Diefen-Break-Hers 3-2 on the season.

“It was a heartbreaker for us but it was a good match all the way through,” captain Becka the Wrecka (Rebecca Tilford) said after the match.

The team now takes the summer off and will start up again in September. The team tries to play a couple of times before Christmas and a couple after.
