Basketball Saskatchewan held its provincial club championships in Prince Albert on the weekend with the host Lakers capturing three of the six titles and finishing second in two others.
The Prince Albert Lakers won gold medals in the under-13 boys, under-15 girls and under-17 girls divisions while the under-15 and under-17 boys were outmatched by strong Junior Cougar squads from Regina. The Prince Albert entry in the under-13 girl’s division fell just short of capturing a medal as they lost 30-18 to Melfort in the bronze-medal game.
The Lakers topped the under-13 boy’s category with a 42-32 decision over the Saskatoon Slam Dunk while the under-15 girls capped a perfect weekend with a 54-31 triumph over Melfort. The under-17 girls needed some clutch shooting down the stretch to pull out a 46-39 victory over Melfort in that divisional final.
The under-15 boys were 1-1 in preliminary round-robin play, but they could not solve the Junior Cougars who breezed to the gold medal in that age class with a 98-30 decision in the final game. The under-17 finale was much the same as the Junior Cougars captured the championship with a 92-64 verdict despite Prince Albert’s Brandon Bonneau notching 19 points.
The only division where Prince Albert did not medal was the under-13 girls with Saskatoon finishing first and second after the Saskatoon Slam ran away with the title by a 56-12 margin.
