City teams meet to decide provincial champ

The Prince Albert Optimist Toppers En Fuego 14U captured their third consecutive provincial title in Saskatoon on April 27.  En Fuego defeated their club-mates the Optimist Toppers Esprit in an exciting gold medal game.  Members of the winning team are: Front L-R Erika Thorimbert, Nicole Dobrowolsky, Gage Grassick (Spirit of the Game award winner), Taylor Barber, Hailey Smith, Asia Keddie. The final of the 14U Women Conexus Provincial Volleyball Championship was an all-city affair as the Prince Albert Optimist Toppers En Fuego defeated the Prince Albert Optimist Toppers Esprit to take the provincial crown.

It was one of several age groups being contested in Saskatoon and Warman over the weekend.

En Fuego beat Esprit 25-15, 25-18 in Sunday’s Tier 1 Gold Medal final as they went undefeated over the weekend. They also won both Subway Sask Cups earlier in the season. They beat RVC Gold and the Saskatoon Smash to book their spot in the final. 

The 14U Women final will be shown on SaskTel Max TV’s Local On Demand Menu this week.

The Esprit, who came into the tournament as eighth seeds, lost twice in the tournament but beat the second-seeded Heat and the Stingers in a semifinal to earn a second shot at their cross-town rival, who they lost to earlier in the tournament.

In other action, the Prince Albert Optimist Toppers Fuerza took 14U Tier 3 bronze after they beat the Battleford VC Blaze 25-14, 17-25, 15-8.

Playoff results for the Prince Albert Smashing Bananas 14U were unavailable.

In 14U Tier 4 action, the Oxbow Black Knights beat the Prince Albert Volleyball Club Fusion 26-24, 25-19 in the final. 

The Prince Albert Volleyball Club Smashing Bananas 13U Women finished seventh.

In 13U Women’s action, Prince Albert Optimist Toppers Esprit finished eighth and the Prince Albert Volleyball Club Fusion finished 11th.

In men’s action, the 16U Prince Albert Volleyball Club (PAVC) Smashing Bananas put another trophy on their mantle by beating the Saskatoon Junior Huskies 25-16, 25-23 in Sunday’s gold medal match. 

It’s been a har-fought season between the two teams, with Smashing Bananas winning the Subway Sask Cup #2 and the Junior Huskies winning their club tournament.  

The well-decorated Smashing Bananas team also won provincial titles as 14U in 2012 and 15U in 2013.

The next action for 16U Men is the Canadian Open May 17-19 in Calgary.

SaskTel Max TV’s Local On Demand Menu will also be airing their final.

In 14U men’s play, Prince Albert Volleyball Club Smashing Bananas Gold beat the Saskatoon JCVC Black 25-21, 19-25, 15-8 to take bronze. They were knocked out of the gold medal game in the semifinals by the Swift Current Junior Sundogs, who were unbeaten on the weekend.

Smashing Bananas Black placed seventh.
