Giants win Sask Cup volleyball event

Fittlingly, the two teams with the best records met in the gold-medal final of the Subway Sask Cup #2 under-18 boy’s volleyball tournament at St. Mary High School on the weekend and it was the Southeast Giants from Estevan retaining their perfect record when they won a hard-fought battle against the Huskies from Saskatoon. Both the Giants and Huskies won all three of their preliminary round-robin matches with Estevan getting past Lloydminster and the Prince Albert U-18 Smashing Bananas en route to the championship game while the Huskies defeated Martensville and Melfort in their playoff matches leading up to the final contest. The Huskies grabbed the early advantage in the final match winning 26-24, but the Giants stormed back to win the next two games 25-21 and 15-13. In the bronze-medal contest it was the Smashing Bananas beating Melfort 25-14, 25-18. An under-17 event was also held at Carlton Comprehensive High School on the weekend, but results were unavailable.
