Year by year the Shellbrook Elks are getting closer to competing for an Allan Cup title, but unfortunately they will have to wait one more year after the South East Prairie Thunder swept the Elks in a best-of-five Rathgaber Cup playoff this weekend in Steinbach, Man.
The Elks, who lost the provincial Senior AAA final last year, got over that hurdle this time around, but in their first attempt at winning the western berth in the Allan Cup tournament, they came up just shy in all three games.
The Prairie Thunder, who were awarded the Manitoba berth outright when their only opposition ceased operations earlier this year, won the opening game 2-1 on Friday and then grabbled a stranglehold with a 4-2 triumph on Saturday.
The Elks looked like they were going to prolong the series as they were up 2-0 heading into the third period on Sunday only to see the Prairie Thunder score the equalizer with two minutes remaining in regulation time and then net the winner with two minutes left in the first overtime session.
Korey Diehl had the lone Shellbrook goal on Friday while Cody Danberg and Steve DaSilva notched singles on Saturday. DaSilva and Chris Thompson scored for Shellbrook in Sunday’s finale.
The Prairie Thunder will now head to Dundas, Ont., next month to compete for the national senior men’s championship.
