No one said it was going to be easy!
The Prince Albert Mintos have forced a Game 5 in their Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League quarter-final series against the Tisdale Trojans after a 4-3 double overtime victory on Thursday in Tisdale.
The fifth and deciding game will be played on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre with the winner moving on to the semifinals. Should Prince Albert win they will take on the Battlefords Stars while a Tisdale victory would pit them against the Notre Dame Argos.
The Mintos, who outshot the Trojans 39-21 on Thursday, needed a goal by Jared Blaquiere seven and a half minutes into the second overtime session to secure the win.
Blaquiere had scored earlier in the game giving the 17-year-old Edam product four goals in the post season. Lance Yaremchuk and Teal Sobkowicz also scored for the Mintos, who led 1-0 after 20 minutes of play and were deadlocked at 2-2 entering the second intermission.
Drew Warkentine, Brennan Riddle and Wyatt Hinson scored for Tisdale, who led 3-2 before Sobkowicz tallied on a power play midway through the final frame.
Connor Ingram turned aside 18 shots in the Prince Albert goal while Brandon Holtby stopped 35 Prince Albert blasts.
Every game in the series has been decided by one goal with Prince Albert coming out on top in overtime in the last two games. Sunday’s contest is expected to be another battle with both teams playing for their playoff lives.
MINTO NOTES: Prince Albert had a full complement of players as affiliates Bryce Fiske and Brody Madarsh were summoned to fill in spots left vacant by injuries incurred by Carson Cayer and Braxx George…Minto president Zenon Markowsky is said to be recovering in hospital after suffering a stroke at Wednesday’s game. Markowsky is in stable condition with fans and players alike hoping for a full recovery.
