Willoughby named top rookie

Daily Herald Staff

Former Prince Albert A&W Bear forward Kaitlin Willoughby was named the Canada West rookie of the year on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old Willoughby has had a sensational freshman season with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies scoring 10 goals and adding 15 assists. Willoughby’s fine play has helped the Huskies reach the Canada West final, which is set to begin this weekend against the University of Regina Cougars.

Willoughby played in parts of five seasons with the Bears and tallied 34 goals and 63 assists in 96 career games. Her output is 14th best in Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League history and is second-best on the Bears’ all-time list, behind just Kelly Regnier. Coincidentally, Willoughby and Regnier will square off against each other in the Canada West final as Regnier is in her rookie campaign with the Cougars.
