Moose Jaw Peacock turned out to be a real thorn in the side of local high school basketball teams on the weekend.

Peacock captured the championship at the annual Kelly Smith “Sweet Sixteen” Memorial senior girl’s tournament held in Prince Albert and the Moose Jaw school also topped the field at their own senior boy’s tournament, beating the St. Mary Marauders in the final of that event.

The Marauders, who are the defending provincial 4A senior boys champions and winners of several tournaments already this year, opened the Moose Jaw event with a convincing 96-58 triumph over Swift Current and followed that up with an 87-60 decision over Moose Jaw Central before falling 84-77 to Peacock in the gold-medal game.

Connor Murray led the Marauders in the championship match scoring 27 points while Kienan Holash also had a strong game scoring 15 points. Against Swift Current it was Brandon Bonneau leading the way for St. Mary with 24 points with Luke Smith chipping in with 17 and Aaron Halyk collecting 13 rebounds. Austin Oleksyn, with 19 points, and Bonneau, with 17, led the Marauder attack against Moose Jaw Central.

Carlton Crusaders competed at a tournament in Melfort, but results were unavailable.

Both Carlton and St. Mary senior boy’s teams will be at a tournament in Meadow Lake next weekend while the girls will head down to Moose Jaw for an event.
