Moose Jaw Peacock went undefeated in claiming the gold medal at the annual Kelly Smith Sweet Sixteen Memorial senior girl's basketball tournament on the weekend. St. Mary captured the bronze medal in the 16-team event with a win over Middle Lake. Shown in the photo is some action during the Moose Jaw-St. Mary semifinal on Saturday as both teams fight to get control of a rebound.
Moose Jaw Peacock was unstoppable as they swept through the field to capture the Kelly Smith “Sweet Sixteen” Memorial senior girl’s basketball tournament held at St. Mary High School and Rivier Academy on the weekend. Moose Jaw capped off their perfect run with a 75-54 triumph over Warman in the gold-medal game while the host St. Mary Marauders claimed the bronze medal with a 64-49 decision over Middle Lake. Nicole Kosowan and Quinn Buettner each had 15 points for the Marauders in the win over Middle Lake as St. Mary’s hopes of claiming the championship were dashed by a 67-40 setback to Moose Jaw in a semifinal match-up. St. Mary went 3-1 on the weekend after winning their opening games 43-22 over Lake Lenore and 43-32 over Clavet with the Carlton Crusaders going 2-2 as they also fell to Moose Jaw by a 79-47 margin in a quarter-final clash. Rivier dropped its first two games, including a 60-22 defeat to Moose Jaw in their opening match, and played Meadow Lake in a consolation game to close out the tournament. Moose Jaw will now reciprocate the hospitality as they will host a major tournament this coming weekend with both Carlton and St. Mary expected to attend.
