St. Mary Marauders are two-for-two in senior boy’s high school basketball tournament action this season after the defending provincial 4A champions swept through the field at an event held in Birch Hills on the weekend.
The Marauders, who had captured the gold medal at the Carlton Invitational at the end of November, completed the perfect weekend in Birch Hills with a 103-71 triumph over Melfort in the championship final.
Brandon Bonneau led the Marauders in the final game with 25 points while Austin Oleksinski chipped in with 17. Aaron Halyk was strong at both ends of the court scoring 14 points and hauling in 15 rebounds while Connor Murray had 10 points, 12 assists and 10 steals.
The Marauders opened the tournament with a 103-65 decision over Kinistino and then outscored cross-town rival Carlton 93-58 in a semifinal tilt. Kienan Holash led all Marauder scorers with 21 points in the win over Kinistino while Oleksinski and Bonneau each had 17. Bonneau, with 24, and Evan Parchomchuk, with 22, were the top shooters in the win over Carlton.
The courts will be quiet now for a couple of weeks with St. Mary heading to Moose Jaw on Jan. 10-11 while Carlton senior boys will be in Melfort that same weekend. The senior girls will also return to action that weekend when St. Mary hosts its annual Sweet Sixteen tournament.
