Carlton Comprehensive High School and St. Mary High School each won a city championship as the senior volleyball playoffs were held earlier this week.
In the senior girl’s match on Tuesday at Carlton, the Crusaders swept their cross-town rivals in straight sets – 25-20, 25-12, 25-22 – while the senior boy’s contest on Wednesday at St. Mary was a thrilling five-set duel with the Marauders coming out on top – 20-25, 25-13, 25-23, 18-25, 25-18.
The results follow a trend that has been set this year as the Carlton senior girls have captured five tournament championships while the St. Mary senior boys have also been dominant in tournament action, beating the Crusaders in a number of gold-medal games.
All four local teams will now get ready for the regional playoffs which are scheduled for Nov. 8-9. Both senior girl’s teams will travel to Melfort that weekend to try and secure a spot in the provincial tournament the following weekend in Yorkton while the senior boys squads head to Meadow Lake for regionals in the hopes of garnering berths for their provincial final in Weyburn. All four teams are expected to move on to the provincial finals and all are expected to be a threat to bring home a championship.
