Bragging rights will have to be shared in the Sawchuk household as both Cory and Kayla captured Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association golf championships this weekend in Dodsland.
The Sawchuks performance allowed Carlton Comprehensive High School to record a clean sweep of the titles as the Carlton boy’s team won that event by a staggering 38 strokes over Moose Jaw Vanier.
Cory Sawchuk topped the field in the boy’s draw after carding rounds of 70 and 74 with teammate Cory Selander finishing second after shooting a tournament best 68 on the final day. Selander’s performance moved him from deep in the pack as he opened the tournament with a 79 on Friday.
Other Carlton golfers in the boy’s draw were Zach Hurd (78-74-152 for sixth place) and Cole Hobson (87-88-175 – tied for 31st). St. Mary High School had just one golfer entered in the tournament with Logan Fauchoux finishing in 11th place in the field of 69 after shooting rounds of 79 and 81.
On the girl’s side, Kayla Sawchuk’s victory was never in doubt as her rounds of 74 and 77 were 18 strokes better than runner-up Chloe Sies from Melville.
All of the Carlton golfers have at least one more year of eligibility remaining meaning a repeat performance next year is very plausible.
