The Prince Albert Mintos will put the finishing touches on a lengthy Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League pre-season schedule this weekend when they host the Saskatoon Contacts tonight and Beardy’s Blackhawks on Sunday.
Both games will be played at the Art Hauser Centre with tonight’s tilt set to start at 7 p.m. while Sunday’s match is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
The Mintos are coming off their first win of the exhibition season as they outscored the Tisdale Trojans 8-3 on Wednesday. Prior to that contest the Telus Cup western regional hosts had dropped three straight games and had scored just once in each of those setbacks.
It has been a difficult start to the year as injuries and players making teams at a higher level have caused plans to be changed, but the Mintos did get some good news this week as 16-year-old defenseman Lochlan Morrison will be back with the club. Morrison was trying out with the Western Hockey League’s Calgary Hitmen and was down to the final cuts before it was decided that he be returned to Prince Albert for one more season of Midget AAA hockey.
Two other players who could have returned to the team – Lance Yaremchuk and Bryton Sayers – are still with their respective WHL clubs, the Prince Albert Raiders and Lethbridge Hurricanes.
The Mintos will use this weekend’s schedule to scrutinize the players still in camp and make final decisions on roster moves prior to the start of the regular schedule, which is next weekend.
Prince Albert opens the regular campaign with a home game on Sept. 28 as the Moose Jaw Generals will be at the Art Hauser Centre for a 1:30 p.m. contest.
