If the result of Thursday’s Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League exhibition game between the Prince Albert A&W Bears and Saskatoon Stars is any indication it could be a very long season. The Bears and Stars battled to a 2-2 draw through 60 minutes of regulation time and five more in overtime and then needed 10 rounds in the shootout before Cassidy Carlson buried the winner to give Prince Albert a dramatic 3-2 triumph. The game, which was the Bears only one on home ice in the pre-season, was dominated at times by the Stars as the shots on goal were 35-13 in favour of Saskatoon, but despite that stat Prince Albert held a 2-1 advantage with under two minutes to go in the third period when Courtney Cormack got the game on even terms after a wild goal-mouth scramble. Sierra Glass and Amy Weightman had staked Prince Albert to the slim advantage with Sophia Shirley notching the other Saskatoon goal. Jessica Vance was brilliant in the Bears’ goal stopping 33 shots, plus 10 more in the shootout, and Prince Albert native Karlee Fetch made 11 saves in the Saskatoon goal along with nine additional stops in the shootout. The Bears played most of the game without their offensive leader Tylor Lindsay as the second-year forward left the match after the first period when she fell ill. The Bears and Stars will get back together for one final exhibition contest on Tuesday in Saskatoon with the regular season set to begin on Sept. 28 when the Weyburn Gold Wings visit Prince Albert for a doubleheader. The game on Sept. 28 will be played at the Kinsmen Arena at 7 p.m. with the second match set for a 1:30 p.m. start on Sept. 29 at the Art Hauser Centre.
