Saskatoon’s Kathy Ziglo has had her work cut out for her in trying to defend the Conexus Ladies Lobstick championship she won a year ago and it doesn’t get any easier as the tournament enters the semifinal round today at Waskesiu Lake.
After opening with an 83 on qualifying day on Monday, Ziglo needed an extra hole in her first match against Dana Kidd of Saskatoon on Tuesday and then in quarter-final play on Wednesday she had to go the entire 18 holes before getting past the low-qualifier, Lori Salahub from Flin Flon.
Now she has 14-year-old Brooke Hobson from Prince Albert waiting for her today.
Hobson, the two-time defending provincial junior girl’s champion, is in her first ever Ladies Lobstick and so far she has kept pace with her more experienced competitors.
In fact, Hobson has held her own very nicely as she qualified with a seven-over-par 78 and then got past North Battleford’s Deanna Klusa in her first match before ousting Cooke Municipal Golf Course clubmate Arlene Segin on the 17th hole on Wednesday.
Ziglo and Hobson are familiar with each other from the Ladies Northern tournament, but they have never faced each other in match-play so today’s round should be entertaining.
Hobson is the last Prince Albert golfer still in contention for the title as, in addition to Segin, Pauline McDougall also bowed out on Wednesday when she was defeated on the 14th hole by Abra Thompson from Canwood. Thompson will meet Kim Brown, formerly of Prince Albert but now out of Saskatoon, in the other semifinal today as Brown needed just 15 holes to eliminate Lori Boyle from Moose Jaw in the other quarter-final tilt on Wednesday.
On the consolation side of the Championship Flight, Carol Spanks from Saskatoon defeated Kidd, Vera Pezer from Waskesiu Lake got past Klusa, Nancy Brooks from Calgary bettered Sheila Palmer from Waskesiu Lake and Andrea Ring from Prince Albert beat Kathy Ford from Saskatoon.
Consolation side semifinal matches feature Spanks meeting Pezer and Brooks squaring off with Ring today.
All other flight semifinals will also be played today with finals in all flights scheduled for Friday morning.
