Prince Albert golfers had a great start in the match-play portion of the Pepsi Junior Men’s Lobstick at Waskesiu Lake on Tuesday as three of the five local competitors have moved into today’s quarter-final action of the Championship Flight.
Cory Sawchuk and Cory Selander, who shared the low-qualifier honours on Monday when they both carded one-under-par 69s, have moved one step closer to winning the title as has Zach Hurd, another member of Cooke Municipal Golf Course.
Sawchuk defeated Tyler Sherwood from Canora in his first match while Selander got past Stuart Martell from Eagle Ridge and Hurd bettered Corey Bailey from Shaunovan.
Prince Albert golfers who dropped to the consolation side of the Championship Flight were Logan Fauchoux and Kyle Schneider. Fauchoux was defeated by Kyle Wiebe from from Madison and Schneider lost to Matthew Baker from Saskatoon.
Other first-round matches had Eric Neilson from Saskatoon outlast Roman Timmerman from Saskatoon, Justin Wood from Unity defeated Zach Yuzdepski from Saskatoon and Kade Johnson from Yorkton upended Ty Campbell from Saskatoon.
In today’s quarter-finals it will be Sawchuk meeting Hurd, Neilson takes on Wiebe, Selanders squares off against Wood and Baker goes up against Johnson.
On the consolation side of the draw, Sherwood faces Bailey, Timmerman tangles with Fauchoux, Martell battles Yuzdepski and Schneider takes on Campbell.
Semifinals in all flights will be played on Thursday with all flight finals scheduled for Friday morning. Due to a lack of entries, there is no junior girl’s category this year.
