Tashawna Belhumeur from Carlton Comprehensive High School was the lone gold medalist from Prince Albert at the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association wrestling championships held in Regina on the weekend.
Belhumeur, who has been wrestling for three years, upset national champion Amanda Wall from Saskatoon in the female under-53 kilogram final. Prior to this weekend’s meet, Belhumeur had lost just one match and that was to Wall at an earlier competition.
Carlton had sent just four competitors to the provincial championship while St. Mary High School had a team of 12.
Kayla Richards was the lone St. Mary athlete to get a medal as she finished second in the female under-68 KG category, losing to Megan Anderson from Winston Knoll Collegiate out of Regina.
Charles Cook (male under-50 KG), Josie Lehner (female under-50 KG) and Sydney McIntyre (female under-90 KG) all from St. Mary placed fifth in their respective weight classes.
Most of the local wrestlers will now prepare for the national junior and cadet club championships to be held in Saskatoon at the beginning of April.
