The mantel is getting pretty full for the St. Mary High School senior boy’s basketball team.
For the eighth time this year, the Marauders have returned home with a gold medal as they captured the tournament championship at the North Battleford Composite invitational on the weekend.
St. Mary outscored Yorkton 73-62 in the gold-medal game with Patience Ishimwe leading the offence with 33 points. Ishimwe also had 11 steals while Brian Tolentino had 15 points. Aaron Halyk had a strong game at both ends of the court as he scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Marauders went undefeated in the eight-team tournament beating Lloydminster 82-42 in their opening game and Moose Jaw Peacock 82-56 in the semifinals.
St. Mary, which has also won titles at North Battleford JP II, Carlton Comprehensive High School, Birch Hills, Yorkton, Swift Current and Meadow Lake as well as their own event, will be in Warman next weekend for the conference finals.
Carlton Crusaders and Warman will also be competing in that event with two clubs moving on to the regional championships the following weekend. Should St. Mary or Carlton finish first at the conference event, they will be the host team for the regional tournament.
On the girl’s side, St. Mary was involved in a mini-tournament in Meath Park on the weekend as they used games against Birch Hills, Lake Lenore and Meath Park as a tune-up for next weekend’s conference finals in Melfort.
Details of Carlton’s weekend were unavailable, but they will join St. Mary at the conference event next weekend with four of the six teams competing moving on to the regional finals. The top team from the Melfort competition will host the regional qualifier the following weekend.
