The gold medals around the necks of the St. Mary senior boy’s basketball team is starting to give off quite a gleam.
For the sixth time this year the Marauders captured a tournament championship as they capped a perfect weekend at their own event with a 95-62 victory over Swift Current in the gold-medal game.
Patience Ishimwe paced the Marauders attack in the final game scoring 17 points while Riley Houle and Brian Tolentino each scored 16.
Tolentino was named the St. Mary most valuable player while Marshall Siemans received the same honour for Swift Current.
The Marauders had little trouble in adding the St. Mary title to their growing collection as they outscored Saskatoon Mount Royal 92-53 in their opening game and then routed Moose Jaw Vanier 77-43 in semifinal play.
Carlton Crusaders were also competing at the tournament and after falling 93-82 to Swift Current in their opening contest, they defeated North Battleford Composite 86-47 and Mount Royal 55-39 to win the consolation title. Yorkton won the bronze medal with an 80-68 victory over Moose Jaw Vanier.
St. Mary, which previously had won titles at Carlton, Birch Hills, Meadow Lake, Yorkton and North Battleford, will head to Swift Current this coming weekend in search of lucky No. 7. Carlton is off for two weeks before returning to the hardcourt.
In senior girl’s action, Carlton Crusaders were at the St. Joesph’s invitational in Saskatoon where they crushed Saskatoon Bethlehem 63-22 in the seventh-place game.
Carlton, who got 24 points from Kate Mitchell in the win over Bethlehem, lost their first two games of the tournament 75-48 to Regina Leboldus and 52-51 to Swift Current. The Crusaders held a seven-point lead with 48 seconds to play in the game against Swift Current, but could not hold on for the win.
St. Mary senior girls were also in action as they won one and lost two in a mini-tournament played in Kinistino. St. Mary beat Sandy Bay, but lost to Birch Hills and Kinistino.
Both St. Mary and Carlton senior girl’s teams are off now until March 1 when they have one final tune-up before conference playoffs the following weekend.
