More than 90 shooters from across the province were in Prince Albert on the weekend for the Saskatchewan Archery Association’s provincial 3D championships.

The Prince Albert Timberlands Bowbenders were the hosts for the event, which was held at the indoor riding stable in the Red River Roping and Riding Club.

Competitions were held in 20 different categories with shooters competing in either recurve or compound bow disciplines. There were also a number of age classes for both male and female entrants with the ages ranging from eight to 70 years old.

Prince Albert shooters, which numbered about 20 in total, captured seven titles with a pair of archers from Montreal Lake also laying claim to provincial championships.

Competitors fired arrows at a variety of different targets and at varying distances with points being awarded in accordance to where they were embedded in the target. Each competitor had to compete in two rounds with aggregate scores determining the champions.

Unlike most sports, archery does not use provincial champions as the sole determining factor for those to move on to national competitions. Although the provincial championship is a vital component to the program, national events are open to any competitor willing to make the journey and cover the costs.

This year’s national 3D championships are next weekend in Medicine Hat, Alta., and a number of the competitors who were in Prince Albert will be making the trip in search of a national title.
