The Carlton Invitational senior boy’s basketball tournament gets under way today with the host Crusaders taking on Melfort in the opening match at 3 p.m. in the Red Gym at Carlton Comprehensive High School.

The eight-team field also has Meadow Lake, Warman, St. Mary High School, Nipawin, Weyburn and Birch Hills vying for the title in the double-knockout format.

The St. Mary Marauders, who won the championship at a tournament in North Battleford last weekend, will play their first game at 6 p.m. against Nipawin.

The losing teams from today’s four opening-round games will drop down to the consolation event with semifinals on that side of the draw to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The winning teams from today’s clashes will square off in championship-side semifinal action on Saturday with those contests scheduled for noon and 1:30 p.m. starts. The losers of the championship event semifinals will take to the court at 6 p.m. to fight for the bronze medal while the winners of those semifinals will battle it out for the gold medal at 7:30 p.m.

The consolation final and seventh-place games will take place at 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.
