The high school basketball season officially got under way on the weekend when the St. Mary Marauders captured the gold medal at an invitational senior boy’s tournament in North Battleford.
The Marauders won the title with a convincing 85-43 triumph over Meadow Lake as Riley Houle paced the attack with 16 points. To get to the championship game the Marauders blasted the host North Battleford squad 93-24 in the opening round and in the semifinals they outscored Warman 63-50.
In the rout of North Battleford, Brian Tolentino led the Marauders with 24 points and Cody Sjogren added 18 while against Warman it was Aaron Halyk leading St. Mary at both ends of the court as the Grade 12 player had 14 rebounds and 17 points. Houle also had a strong game on the boards pulling in 15 rebounds.
Next up on the schedule is the Carlton Invitational senior boy’s event next weekend. The host Carlton Crusaders will open the tournament against Melfort with St. Mary’s first game to be played against Nipawin.
