Bears take Alberta by storm after winning NAIT invitational tournament

The Prince Albert A&W Bears have gotten out of the gates quickly this year winning the annual NAIT invitational tournament in Edmonton on the weekend.

The Bears capped a perfect 3-0 run through the tournament schedule with a 1-0 decision over the St. Albert Slash in the final game on Sunday.

Megan Slobidshan had the lone goal for Prince Albert while Jessica Vance kicked out all 30 shots in recording the shutout and picking up player-of-the game honours. It was Vance’s third game star award of the tournament as she was also selected in the 2-1 triumph over Grant McEwen College and 3-0 victory over the Sherwood Park Fury.

In the win over Grant McEwen, the Bears got goals from Kaitlin Willoughby and Kelly Regnier while against Sherwood Park it was Amy Weightman, Sydney Beckman and Taylor Lindsay who provided the offence.

While out in Alberta, the Bears also managed to squeeze in a pair of exhibition games with the Edmonton Thunder spoiling the perfect weekend. The Thunder skated to a 7-1 triumph in the first exhibition contest with Prince   Albert rebounding to edge the Spruce Grove Saints 2-1 in the other match.

Scoring for Prince Albert against Spruce Grove was Jennifer Sunderland and Weightman while Regnier had the lone marker in the loss against Edmonton. Sarah Olson tended the Prince Albert net in both exhibition contests.

The Bears return to action on Saturday when they will host the Saskatoon Stars at 7:30 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre. The Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League regular season begins on
