Prince Albert will definitely have at least one player in the Championship Flight semifinals following opening-round play on Tuesday at the Pepsi Junior Men’s Lobstick golf tournament at Waskesiu Lake.

Cory Selander and Cory Sawchuk, both from Cooke Municipal Golf Course, won their respective matches on Tuesday and will square off against each other today in quarter-final action at the Waskesiu Lake Golf Course.

Selander, the 2012 provincial men’s champion, beat Mitchell McPhail from LaRonge while Sawchuk got past Luke Pauli from Prince Albert. The winner of the Selander-Sawchuk tilt will go up against the winner of the Kyle Wiebe (Kindersley) and Garrett Blair (Lanigan) match in the semifinals on Thursday.

Wiebe, the tournament’s low qualifier and last year’s Championship Flight consolation winner, defeated Jimmy Lambert from Saskatoon on Tuesday while Blair, last year’s Championship Flight runner-up, outshot Bryan Matkowski from Saskatoon.

Other first-round matches on Tuesday had Zach Hurd from Prince Albert beat Jackson Hill from Humboldt, Mike Fiegel from Moose Jaw topped Aaron Baker from Humboldt, McKenzie Russell from Saskatoon won over Logan Fauchoux from Prince Albert and Liam Courtney from Waskesiu defeated Justin Paradis from Prince Albert.

In addition to Selander meeting Sawchuk and Wiebe taking on Blair, the other quarter-final matchups today will have Fiegel going up against Hurd and Russell squaring off against Courtney.

The girl’s Junior Lobstick is a medal-play affair due to the low number of players competing and Prince Albert’s Brooke Hobson is poised to defend her crown after carding a 79 on Tuesday. Hobson, the 2012 provincial girl’s champion, has a two-day total of 156, which is 11 shots better than clubmate Kayla Sawchuk, who had an 86 on Tuesday to go with her opening-round score of 81.

Play in all flights in the junior men’s division will continue today with all flight finals scheduled for Friday. The girl’s will play their third round today and complete the four-day event on Thursday.
