Outdoor Classic — Jan. 19, 2013

The inaugural Flaman’s Outdoor Classic on Saturday is definitely a cool event. The idea for the event -- which featured several outdoor games from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. -- was first hatched a couple of years ago when the Crescent Heights Arena reconstructed their outdoor facility and built it to regulation size – 85 feet by 200 feet. But nobody counted on temperatures in the low -20s. Daily Herald reporter chronicled the day with pictures.

The coaches and players of the Atom Rangers have a last-minute conversation before the very first game is played at the Flaman’s Outdoor Classic on Saturday at the Crescent Heights Arena. The Rangers played the Black Canadians, but unfortunately were on the short end of a 4-2 score. 1 width:500px;height:375px  Shown are some of the many volunteers that helped during the bone-chilling day at the inaugural Flaman’s Outdoor Classic. Prince Albert A&W Bears’ board members Jackie Packet, far left, and Laura Quesnel, second from left, worked the main admissions tent while Mintos board member Merle Kozun, second from right, was at the 50/50 and special jersey table the entire day. A&W Bears manager Liane Vance, far right, is checking in with the group prior to the first-ever Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League game played outdoors between the Bears and Saskatoon Stars. 2 width:500px;height:375px The Prince Albert A&W Bears gather around starting goaltender Jessica Vance prior to the opening face-off of their game against the Saskatoon Stars. The Bears won the game 3-0 with Vance and Sara Olson splitting the goaltending duties and the shutout. 3 width:500px;height:375px The weather was bitterly cold, but it didn’t keep the loyal fans away from the rink for the first-ever Flaman’s Outdoor Classic. As the day went on the mercury dropped even further, but the number of fans continued to increase. 4 width:500px;height:375px Saskatoon Stars netminder Samantha Ridgewell smothers the puck during her team's 3-0 loss to the A&W Bears. 5 width:500px;height:375px

The Mintos turned in a solid performance in frigid conditions to blank the Saskatoon Blazers in Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League action. 6 width:500px;height:375px Prince Albert Raider forwards Mark McNeill, left, and Leon Draisaitl were part of the opening ceremonies prior to the game between the Prince Albert Mintos and Saskatoon Blazers. McNeill and Draisaitl, who both just returned from Ufa, Russia, where they competed at the world junior hockey championships, joined Mayor Greg Dionne, far left, Outdoor Classic co-chair Don Fauchoux, second from right, and Crescent Heights Community Club president Rob Beauchesene for the ceremonial opening face-off. 7 width:500px;height:375px Carole Ring sings the national anthem prior to the Prince Albert Mintos and Saskatoon Blazers game at the Flaman’s Outdoor Classic on Saturday. Local musician Donny Parenteau did the same honour earlier in the day prior to the A&W Bears and Saskatoon Stars contest. 8 width:500px;height:375px Local musician Donny Parenteau sings the anthem prior to the A&W Bears and Saskatoon Stars contest. 9 width:500px;height:375px
