The vicious assault on Marlene Bird has now become a national story.

And while the coverage by the Globe and Mail and others is welcome, the tragedy and the resulting support very much remains a local story.

Whether it’s the get-well cards lovingly crafted by youngsters or the financial donations provided by those who have the ability to give, there is some light in the extremely dark story of an innocent woman being beaten nearly to death.

Indeed, it was good news last Friday that city police Chief Troy Cooper is confident that an arrest will made. Let’s hope that it’s soon and that the resulting sentence reflects the horror of the crime.

Prince Albert residents can show their support for Bird at a march early Thursday morning that begins at City Hall at 9 a.m.

We’ll leave it to one of the youngsters to say what all good people are surely thinking.

“I’m sorry to hear what happened to you and I’m very heartbroken and I bet your family is, too. We are all praying for you to get better and we all love you, and hope for the best for you! You are beautiful from the inside and out!”
