Guillaume Rivain

French student Guillaume Rivain is spending a month in the Prince Albert Daily Herald’s newsroom during his visit to the city, which was brought about by the Rotary club of Prince Albert. Here are the 16-year-old’s initial thoughts about his time in Saskatchewan. We’ll check back with him as his visit continues.

The story of this trip started when two guys from Prince Albert visited my house in France.

My dad met them in Saskatchewan so they came to our house when they passed through France. They had dinner with us and we talked about loads of things.

So when I said that I loved the linguistic trips, they offered me the idea to come in Prince Albert this summer. I thought that it was awesome but unrealizable. After a lot of calling and preparations, I’m here in a town of a little bit more than 40,000 people in the middle Saskatchewan, far away from my house.

It was a very long 24-hour trip between Paris and Saskatoon via Toronto. I’m arrived very late so it was harder to adapt myself to the jetlag and the late hour of arrival.

While I’m here, I’ll sleep in the homes of four different families. It’s better than just one because your spirit can focus on this family and think that everybody will do the same. So with that I will see some different culture and lifestyles.

In Europe, we think we know all the North American culture but it’s not true. We know only some things because of the movies and TV shows; we have also a lot of clichés about the Americans. Some are true but a lot are false.

So for a man who comes from Europe, it’s surprising because it is in part like the movies but in part it’s not.

If you are coming to Canada like a simple tourist, it’s not as good as coming here and staying with some local families. If you are a tourist, you will see a lot of things but you can’t adapt and learn the culture.

It’s a richer experience to go and stay with some families than to go and stay at the hotel. It’s very important to see and learn all the differences between our two cultures because it’s different than that we think in Europe.

Prince Albert is a very nice city with some great people, but the best thing here is all the wildlife that you can find.

It’s a quite big city but there are trees everywhere, you can go and have a walk next to the river and it’s very awesome with the trees, the water, the birds and the beautiful sunset!

You can also drive around the city; there are a lot of parks with some very beautiful hiking trails. In the north there is a Canadian national park and this is completely beautiful.

There are no words to describe this; it’s just splendid with all the lakes, the different kinds of trees, the village of Waskesiu and the scenic road to go here with loads of wild animals.

I’ve been on a little lookout tower and I saw an amazing landscape with a lot of trees, some little hills and the river that is passing through. It was so beautiful. This is also a paradise for the anglers, because with all the lakes and rivers, all the fish you find there and the scenery it’s heaven for fishing lovers.

For now, this is a very rich and beautiful trip that I advise to all wildlife lovers and any person who wants to improve their English.
