Despite the fact it is now illegal in Saskatchewan to drive while talking on a cellphone held in the hand, one short trip through Saskatchewan streets and it's easy to see that many people aren't obeying the new law.

People are still continuing to chat away, cellphone in hand, as they attempt to safely navigate the streets.

It's a little maddening to know that there are those among us who think they can disobey the law, and perhaps more importantly, keep putting others in danger.

The law is there for a reason. It's to protect drivers, their passengers, pedestrians - anyone who uses public roadways.

Holding a cellphone gives up one hand that should be used for care and control of a vehicle.

Once upon a time, it wasn't required by law to wear a seatbelt, to have children of certain ages placed in car seats, or to not be impaired by alcohol while driving. Now it is required in all those cases.

So why keep doing something while driving that's unsafe?

It's time for these cellphone-holding drivers to buck up and adapt to the law by purchasing the necessary equipment to talk on a cellphone hands-free while driving.

I bought a hands free blue tooth device. It works fine, but terrible for private calls. Everyone in the car now knows my buisness, which in some cases can be life changing terrible. Family Chaos, on speaker phone ... yah.... I could pull over, but that would offend my passenger. because what on earth could be so bad.... Ha... If I pull over, they only guess what the other person if saying. All in all , its bad. the head sets are annoying, the speakerphones are too public and if you dont have chaotic familites, then bluetooth works fine. bad drivers, are just bad drivers.... they need to be re taught. the amount of proven accidents from cell phone use is very very small in comparision to all other accidents.

Just wondering if the person who wrote this is the type that goes exactly the speed limit or 1 km under because it also illegel to speed, I agree with obeying the law but when the police and rcmp have already said that right now they are not going to seriously inforce the law how is it you can ask someone to obey a rule that isn't even being pushed. And if it is so unsafe to talk on a cell phone maybe someone should tell the police they shouldn't use their computers well driving which I have seen so many do.....
