And there are many things that can be done. Of course, people can contact the Red Cross, either through its website (redcross.ca) or its toll-free number (1-800-418-1111). But in the days to come, various Prince Albert businesses will also do their part by providing places for people to donate money to the Red Cross.
Details are still in the works, but as of Thursday afternoon, the Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce had stepped forward with the intent of asking its members to step to the plate.
The need is great.
Thursday afternoon, Brunette Bonne-Année told local media outlets a tale that's been repeated elsewhere - she's unable to contact a number of her relatives in Haiti. Phone calls go unanswered, texts end up in the ether.
Police and fire services in Haiti are overwhelmed.
"People are helping each other," she said, adding, "Every little thing can help, right now."
Assisting relief efforts requires money, although not everyone recognizes this.
Fay Tymchak, the local disaster management co-ordinator for the Red Cross, said that some people have come forward with donations of clothing. It's a logistical nightmare trying to move goods in such a situation.
And, she said, the more money the Red Cross and others put into action now, the better.
Fortunately, it's clear that people understand this need, for the response, according to Tymchak, has been overwhelming.
The response efforts are growing, and we ask that readers look to our paper and our website for further news, events and fundraisers.
