RCMP Southey - Missing Person - Presumed Drowned

2014-08-02

9:45

---------------------

On August 1, 2014, at 7:10 p.m., Southey RCMP received a complaint that two individuals were rescued from from Last Mountain Lake near the resort village of Pelican Pointe and that a 36-year-old male was still in the water. Investigators have determined that two adult males (38 and 36 years) and a 10-year-old male youth were fishing off the point that extends into Last Mountain Lake, near the village of Pelican Pointe. Shortly before 7:00 p.m., a storm was seen moving in over the lake. Strong winds created waves over 5 feet in height which swept one of the adult males and the male youth into the lake. While attempting to help bring the adult male and male youth to shore, the 36-year-old male was swept into the water. The adult male and male youth were able to get on the shore; however, the 36-year-old male is missing and presumed to be drowned. The adult male and male youth were examined on the scene by Southey EMS. They were not transported to hospital.

Last night, Southey RCMP Detachment members, RCMP Police Dog Services, provincial Conservation Officers, and civilian searches attempted to locate the missing 36-year-old male. A Collision Reconstructionist also attended to the scene with an unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with a heat sensing camera to assist with search efforts. These efforts did not located the 36-year-old male.

The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team will be attending to the scene today to continue the search for the 36-year-old male. The missing male's family has been notified of the incident and his name will not be released at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.

Cpl. Conrad Logan will be available for media interviews today at noon at the boat launch in the resort village of Pelican Pointe. This will be the only time Cpl. Logan will be available for media interviews. No media interviews will be done prior to this time.
