The Gift of Mercy Fun Run picked up another sponsor on Friday.
Affinity Insurance Services donated $1,000 to the annual charity run, which helps raise money for the Prince Albert Food Bank, the Our House adult shelter and the Rays of Hope for Uganda program.
“We’ve been donating for the past, I think, five or six years and just kind of increasing it every year,” general manager Janet Day said.
“It’s just going for a great cause.… We like to support functions that help people around the community.”
This year’s Fun Run — organized as always by the Prince Albert Alliance Church — will take place on Saturday, Sept. 13 along the Rotary Trail, starting out from the Skate Park.
The event will include two-kilometre, five-kilometre and 10-kilometre runs. All registration fees — set at a minimum of $30 — go directly to charity locally and internationally.
The ever-increasing donations from Affinity Insurance exemplify the growth of community support for the Fun Run, now in its sixth year.
“Sponsors have been fantastic,” co-organizer Ron Poetker said. “We’ve had a number of sponsors that have come on board over the last five, six years.
“People like Affinity Insurance, Advantage Real Estate, Fresh Air Experience, Broda (Construction), have come out every year … They just believe in the run and have supported us every year, and so sponsorship has been a pleasure in that the people that are in our community … see the value of supporting a run like this, and they’ve stepped up and said, ‘Yeah, we want to be part of that.’”

While registration fees go towards the charitable causes, sponsorships help fund the run itself — paying for items such as food, tents, T-shirts and prizes.
As far as the event’s contributions to charity go, the Fun Run continues to move from strength to strength, with charitable donations last year amounting to a record $6,000.
“That was our highest total per year,” Poetker said. “But over the last number of years, we’ve done quite well as far as allowing us to contribute to the various charities that are beneficiaries of our run.”
One of the additional features of the Fun Run in recent years has been the participation of the Prince Albert Mintos, which has proved beneficial to both parties.
“They’re in training camp and they start their season early in September … so we’ve had the Mintos join us as part of their dry land training,” Poetker said.
“It’s been a real boost for us as far as having people run with the Mintos, and it’s been good for them as well, giving them some exposure to being involved with community events as well. So that’ll be happening again this year we understand.”
Meanwhile, the number of participants at the 2014 Fun Run appears roughly in line with previous years.
“We expect the same amount this year,” Poetker said. “Prince Albert’s interesting in that usually the majority of the registrations come in the last week of the run.”
