Kicking off the 131st Annual Prince Albert Summer Fair and Exhibition, Gord Broda served as this year’s honorary parade marshal on Monday evening.

Near the front of the 62-float parade, Broda sat behind his cherished custom-built 1956 Ford F-100 truck with his son, Joel.

“The truck took on its own image and own identity, and now as a result there have been a lot of requests,” he said.  “The truck’s kind of become a celebrity in its own way.”

Broda was the truck’s successful bidder during an auction in January for the Saskatchewan Children’s Hospital.

Gene Simmons of the rock group Kiss and his wife Shannon Tweed, who grew up in Saskatoon, put up the truck for auction.

The truck was merged with a Shelby Mustang and a 5.4-litre V8 engine, and has since been nicknamed Snakebit.

“Everybody’s just impressed with the truck,” Broda said. “There are always people anxious to see it, so tonight is just a great opportunity o see the truck, and to hear it, because quite often it’s just parked at a car show.

Joel agrees, noting that it’s always a thrill riding in it.

“It’s cool to be able to share it with everyone else, and for them to see it and drive it around so people get to appreciate it.”

Snakebit will be a central piece to a classic car show that’s being held all week at the Dave Steuart Arena.

Monday night’s parade was a 45-minute affair, winding through downtown Prince Albert to the Exhibition Grounds where the 131st Annual Prince Albert Summer Fair and Exhibition will begin at 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

A notable absence from Monday’s parade was Prince Albert MP Randy Hoback, who was scheduled to be on his way to Israel.

A fact-finding mission, Hoback joined a handful of other Conservative and Liberal MPs in accepting an invitation from a Jewish advocacy group to learn more about the situation.

In Prince Albert, the Summer Fair and Exhibition will continue all week, capping off with an 11 p.m. fireworks display on Saturday night.

There are four slideshows of 20 pictures each from Monday's parade.
